About the name Clifford

Clifford. What a solid, grounded name this is. It comes from Old English, and it means exactly what it sounds like - a ford by a cliff. A crossing point near something strong and enduring. Think about that for a moment. Your name is literally rooted in the landscape of Medieval England, in a place where people crossed rivers beneath great walls of stone. There is something quietly powerful about that. In fact, Clifford began as a place name - tied to Clifford in Herefordshire, England - before it became a name people carried with pride. That journey from place to person is a beautiful one. The name had its golden years in the 1920s and 1930s, when it was a strong, dependable choice for a son. And the qualities people associate with Clifford - loyal, protective, steady, dependable - those words feel very much at home with a name built from cliffs and river crossings. In the world of science and ideas, Clifford Berry was a pioneering computer engineer, one of the minds behind early computing. And Clifford Geertz became one of the most influential anthropologists of the twentieth century. Both men known for their depth and their contribution. And of course, there is one Clifford who captured the hearts of generations of children - Clifford the Big Red Dog. Enormous, gentle, loyal to the end. If your name is Clifford, you carry something rare with you. A name with deep roots, a strong foundation, and a warmth that has stood the test of time.
