Alan

Alan. Simple, strong, and quietly remarkable.

This name reaches all the way back to the Celtic world, first appearing in the 6th century among the ancient peoples of Britain and Brittany. Its most widely known meaning is noble. But here is a detail that adds something even warmer: in the Irish tradition, Alan is also connected to the word for harmony. Noble and harmonious. That is a beautiful combination to carry in a name.

Alan traveled with the Normans into England, took root across Scotland and the British Isles, and eventually spread across the entire English-speaking world. By the 1950s, it was one of the most popular names in both Britain and America. A name that belonged to a whole generation of builders, thinkers, and quiet leaders.

And the Alans who have shaped history? Alan Turing, the brilliant mathematician whose mind helped crack the Enigma code and lay the foundations of modern computing. Alan Shepard, the first American to travel into space. Two men of extraordinary precision and courage, both named Alan.

You might also recognize the name from Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, the dependable, unflappable scientist you absolutely want beside you when things go sideways. That's a very Alan quality, actually.

People named Alan tend to be loyal, honest, and steady. The kind of person whose word means something. Reserved, perhaps, but when they speak, people listen.

If you have a name day, it falls on August 9th. A summer day for a name with real depth.

Alan. Ancient, noble, and quietly, perfectly yours.
