About the name Douglas

Douglas. Now there's a name with real roots. Deep roots. Roots that go all the way back to the rugged highlands of Scotland.

Douglas comes from the Gaelic, and it means "black stream." Picture that for a moment - a dark, fast-moving river cutting through the Scottish landscape, powerful and unyielding. That image has been a name for over eight hundred years, first appearing in the twelfth century as both a place name and a clan name that would become one of the most respected in all of Scotland.

And over the centuries, Douglas traveled. From Scotland out into the wider world, carrying that same sense of quiet, unmistakable strength.

The famous Douglases are quite a group. Douglas MacArthur - one of the most commanding military figures of the twentieth century. Douglas Fairbanks - the great swashbuckling star of early Hollywood. And Douglas Adams - the brilliant, endlessly witty mind who gave us The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Three very different men. All sharing your name.

People named Douglas are so often described as strong, confident, and loyal. Not the kind of loyalty that fades when things get difficult - the kind that holds. The kind people remember.

Douglas had its greatest popularity in the 1940s, and while it may be less common today, that only makes it more distinctive. It stands out now. It has presence.

If your name is Douglas, you carry a name shaped by landscape, by history, and by people who left a mark on the world. That is no small thing. That is something worth knowing.
