About the name Mathew

Mathew. What a name to carry through life. And here is why.

Your name comes from the Hebrew name Mattityahu, which means gift of God. Not just a gift. A gift of God. That is the meaning baked into your name from the very beginning, all the way back in the first century.

And speaking of the first century, Mathew was one of the twelve apostles. A tax collector turned disciple, chosen, trusted, and remembered for thousands of years. That is the original Mathew. And that legacy has carried your name across continents and centuries ever since.

Across those centuries, the name travelled and transformed. You might know it as Matthew in English, Mathieu in French, or Mateo in Spanish. The same beautiful meaning, wrapped in different sounds, spoken in different languages all around the world.

In the 1980s, Mathew was at the height of its popularity, which means there is a whole generation of Mathews out there, and the name has stayed steady and well-loved ever since.

And what a group to share a name with. Matthew McConaughey, Matthew Perry, Matthew Broderick. Talent, charm, and presence, all carrying versions of your name.

People named Mathew are often described as responsible, practical, and analytical. The kind of person others rely on. The kind of person who shows up. And if that sounds like you, well, maybe your name knew something all along.

Your name day, by the way, falls on September 21st. A day worth celebrating. Because Mathew, gift of God, is absolutely worth celebrating.
