About the name Major

If your name is Major, you’re carrying a title that already sounds strong. Major comes from England, with roots in Latin, and it points to “greater” or a “military rank.”

That’s why Major feels like more than a name. It feels like responsibility, steadiness, and protection. It’s an occupational surname turned given name, so it carries that grounded, authoritative energy right from the start.

What makes Major especially special is how it balances power with warmth. People often choose it today for its strength and uniqueness, and in the 1990s it had a noticeable moment. Now it’s still rare, but it’s growing, especially in African American communities.

And when you hear it, you might think of space and leadership too. Major Tom, from the song “Space Oddity,” made the name feel adventurous, memorable, and truly human. If someone ever wondered who you are, your name gives an easy answer: you’re built to stand firm, and to look out for others.
