About the name Giovanni

Giovanni. Even the way it sounds is something special. Say it slowly and you can almost hear the hills of Italy in it.

Giovanni is the Italian form of John, and John itself traces all the way back to the Hebrew name Yochanan, which means "God is gracious." That is one of the oldest and most enduring meanings a name can carry — and it has traveled through thousands of years and dozens of languages to arrive here, in this beautiful Italian form.

From the same ancient root came Ivan in Russia, Jean in France, and Juan across the Spanish-speaking world. Giovanni is the Italian branch of that great family tree, and many would say it is among the most musical versions of all.

And speaking of music — perhaps the most famous Giovanni of all is Don Giovanni, the hero of Mozart's beloved opera. A name so compelling that one of the greatest composers in history built an entire masterpiece around it.

But the name has left its mark far beyond the stage. Giovanni Cassini mapped the rings of Saturn. Giovanni da Verrazzano was among the first Europeans to sail into what is now New York Harbor. And in modern times, actor Giovanni Ribisi has brought the name to a whole new generation.

Giovanni reached its peak popularity in the 1980s and continues to hold a steady, respected place today. Creative, charming, confident — it is a name with real presence.

If your name day falls on June 24th, that is yours to celebrate. And what a name to celebrate it with.
