Erica

The name Erica. There is something quietly powerful about this name, and I think once you hear where it comes from, you will never look at it the same way again.

Erica is a name with Norse roots, born in medieval Scandinavia, and it carries one of the most remarkable meanings a name can hold. Eternal ruler. Not just a leader for a moment, not just someone in charge for a season, but eternal. Enduring. That is the energy woven into this name from the very beginning.

It is the feminine form of Eric, a name that Norse culture held in the highest regard. And when Erica arrived as its own name, it carried all of that strength and added something more, a grace, a presence that is entirely its own.

Erica had its golden moment in the 1970s, when it was everywhere, and it is easy to understand why. The name just feels right on someone who walks into a room and commands it naturally, without trying.

And the women who have carried this name? Erica Jong, one of the most bold and fearless literary voices of the twentieth century. Erica Campbell, a celebrated singer whose talent and spirit have inspired millions. Erica Durance, whose screen presence brought strength and warmth to every role she touched. These are not coincidences. This name has a way of finding remarkable people.

If your name is Erika with a K, by the way, that is simply the Scandinavian and German spelling of the very same name, same roots, same meaning, same soul.

And here is something that might make you smile. In Scandinavia, Erica even has its own day on the calendar. May eighteenth. A day set aside to celebrate this name and everyone who carries it.

Eternal ruler. That is you, Erica. That has always been you.
