About the name Demi

Demi is a name that feels bright and personal the moment you say it. It comes from Greek, and the meaning is “half or small.” And yet, if you think of it that way, it becomes wonderfully encouraging. Small can be precise. Half can be flexible. Demi holds the idea that you can be compact and still powerful, gentle and still unforgettable.

This name began as a shortened form of Demetria, but it grew into its own standalone name in the 20th century. That shift matters. It means your name is not just a nickname that stuck around. It became something official, something chosen, something full-grown.

People often describe that same spirit as confident, creative, and adaptable, and Demi fits that energy naturally. It was especially popular in the 1990s, and today it remains moderately rare, which makes it feel even more like you.

If you hear variations like Demetria, Demi-Lee, or Demi-Rae, they are phonetically distinct, like different chapters of the same theme. And when you hear Demi Lovato or Demi Moore, you get that extra spark of recognition that reminds you: your name belongs on real stages. Demi is proof that something “small” can still carry a lot of light.
