About the name Cecil

Cecil. Just hearing it, you can almost feel how solid and steady it is. The name comes from Latin Caecilius, meaning “blind one.” And that early meaning sounds so unexpected for a name you might wear with confidence. Here is the beautiful turn: over time, Cecil became connected with Saint Cecilia. People associated Cecilia with music and, symbolically, with sight, so the name started to feel like more than its original meaning. Cecil is Welsh Roman in its history of use, beginning in the Roman era, which is why it has that classic, ancient taste. If your name has cousins in other places, you may recognize them in the sound: Cecile, Cecilie, Cecilia. And even Ceciliano, with its extra warmth at the end. Cecil also carries the vibe of an intelligent, disciplined, visionary person. June 22 is often noted as the Catholic feast day, and when names come with a day like that, they feel like they belong to a living story. Your name is older than you think, and somehow it still feels present.
