About the name Carol

Carol. This name has a warmth to it that feels almost like home.

Carol traces back through Latin and Germanic roots, and at its heart it carries the meaning of free. Specifically, free person. That's the same ancient root that gave us the name Charles, and from there it branched out in all kinds of beautiful directions. Caroline, Carole, Carla. All sisters of the same idea, but Carol has its own quiet elegance.

The name has been around since at least the 11th century, which means it has had a very long time to become beloved. And beloved it became. Carol reached its peak in the 1940s, when it felt like every other household had someone wonderful with this name. There's a reason for that staying power.

People named Carol are often described as traditional and deeply family-oriented. The kind of person who creates warmth around them without even trying. The kind of person you remember.

And the famous Carols of the world have certainly made themselves remembered. Carol Burnett, one of the greatest comediennes who ever lived, a woman who made millions of people laugh with her whole heart. Carol Channing, whose stage presence was like no one else. And of course, Carol Brady, the warm and steady center of one of television's most beloved families.

There's even a piece of music that carries this name into the most magical time of year. Carol of the Bells. A song that fills rooms with something that feels a lot like joy.

If your name is Carol, you carry a name that has meant freedom, warmth, and love across a thousand years of human history.
