Atticus

Atticus. What a name to carry through the world.

This name reaches all the way back to Ancient Greece, to a region called Attica, the land surrounding Athens, the very heart of classical civilization. So at its core, Atticus simply means "from Attica." But what a place to be from. A place of philosophy, of rhetoric, of some of the greatest thinking humanity has ever produced.

The name was used in classical antiquity, and it carried a certain weight even then, a sense of learning, of culture, of refinement. Across different languages and traditions, you'll find it as Attikos in Greek, Attico in Italian. Each version carrying that same classical gravity.

But here is where the story gets truly special. In 1960, Harper Lee published To Kill a Mockingbird, and she gave her hero a name that would become legendary. Atticus Finch. A lawyer. A father. A man of quiet, unshakeable principle. He was later voted America's favorite literary hero, and the name Atticus surged back into the world with new energy. Parents who wanted to give their sons something that meant something reached for this name.

And they were not wrong to. Because Atticus carries a tradition, a whole classical humanist tradition, of being principled, wise, and just. Those are the qualities this name has always whispered.

Today the name is rising, and it deserves every bit of that moment. In music, composer Atticus Ross has brought this name into contemporary culture, winning Academy Awards, shaping the soundtracks of our time.

So if your name is Atticus, know that you carry something ancient and something alive all at once. A name rooted in the golden age of human thought, and made timeless by one of the most beloved stories ever told.
