Amos

Amos. What a name this is. Quietly powerful, ancient, and full of meaning.

Amos comes from Biblical Hebrew, and it carries one of the most beautiful meanings you'll find in any name: carried by God. Some traditions also translate it as burden bearer, which speaks to a different kind of strength, the kind that holds things together for others. Either way, there is something deeply purposeful in this name.

Amos first appeared in the Bible as a prophet and shepherd from a place called Tekoa. He wasn't a man of privilege or position. He was a working man, a man of the land, who spoke with extraordinary wisdom and moral clarity. There's something in that story that feels very true to the name itself.

The name had a strong moment in the 19th century, beloved by communities who valued scripture and substance. And now, beautifully, Amos is reviving. A new generation is rediscovering it. And honestly, it's not hard to see why.

People who study names often describe Amos as steadfast, thoughtful, and just. The kind of person others lean on without even realizing it. That's a quiet kind of greatness.

In the world of real achievers, this name has traveled far. Amos Oz, one of the most celebrated writers of the 20th century. Amos Tversky, the psychologist whose work changed how we understand human decision-making. Amos Lee, a singer whose music carries warmth and soul. Not a bad company to share a name with.

If your name is Amos, know this: your name is ancient, it is grounded, and it has always belonged to people who mattered.
