About the name Allison

Allison. There's a timeless elegance to that name, and once you know what it means, you'll never hear it quite the same way again.

Allison means noble. That's the whole story in one word, really. Noble. And it has been carrying that meaning since the Middle Ages, when it first emerged from its Germanic roots by way of Scotland.

It's actually a beautiful descendant of the name Alice, which has been beloved for centuries. Allison is what happens when a classic name travels, settles into a culture, and grows into something with its own distinct character. Scottish tradition gave it warmth and confidence, and those qualities have stayed with it ever since.

The name had a wonderful moment in the spotlight through the 1990s, and it's also a name that has inspired artists. Elvis Costello wrote a song called Allison that became genuinely iconic. Your name has been sung.

You might also see it written as Allyson, and many Allisons go by Ally, which carries that same bright energy in a more casual, everyday form.

When it comes to famous Allisons, the name has been worn with real distinction. Allison Janney, one of the most awarded actresses in Hollywood. Allison Williams, known and celebrated across both television and film. Women of presence. Of intelligence. Of poise.

If your name is Allison, you share it with centuries of that same quality. Noble isn't just a meaning here. It's a legacy. And it belongs to you.
